The voice of witnesses

75 years after the end of the Holocaust, the character of the survivor, the witness, has become, more than ever, an essential and necessary symbol. The stories of these witnesses, whether they were told, written or recorded during or after the event, constitute an immense source of information about the Holocaust today an immense source of information about the Holocaust — a comprehensive and unparalleled collection representing the memory of the Holocaust, which will live on after their passing, to be studied by future generations.

With this special exhibition, the Shoah Memorial invites the public to think about it means to be a witness, notably through the voices and words of Primo Levi, Simone Veil, Élie Wiesel, Imre Kertész, Marceline Loridan-Ivens, Samuel Pisar andAharon Appelfeld.

The exhibition shines a spotlight on the history of the testimony and its presence in the public space, through a  frieze composed of biographies, original manuscripts, film and sound archives. Analysis and commentaries by intellectuals, personalities and historians run alongside the documents to help us understand them further. The exhibition also shows, in a creative way, the determination of the the third generation after the survivors to continue the transmission of the memory of the Holocaust.
